#REUE2024 Conference

Societies are facing increasing pressure to adapt to environmental demands as climate change becomes a central concern on the global agenda. Sustainability, once seen as an option, is now, or should be, an absolute priority for governments, companies and citizens. To meet this challenge, coordinated policies are essential to promote the transformation of production and consumption systems, centred on the efficiency, durability and sustainability of products.

In this context, the European Union Ecolabel (REUE) has played a crucial role in helping consumers and economic operators to identify products and services that fulfil excellent environmental performance standards. The Directorate-General for Economic Activities (DGAE), as the Competent Body for granting REUE licences in Portugal, has been strengthening the promotion of this system and raising awareness among stakeholders of its impact.

The theme of the #REUE2024 conference was ‘The Passport to Sustainability’, and it was an opportunity to explore the relationship between the REUE and the new Ecodesign Regulation - a key instrument for increasing the sustainability of products placed on the EU market, by establishing minimum sustainability requirements that all products will have to respect regardless of their origin, reinforcing the need to integrate sustainability principles throughout the product value chain.

With a carefully planned agenda, the event featured speeches by Pierre Henry, representative of the European Commission (DG ENV) and Carla Pinto, Director of Corporate Sustainability Services at DGAE, who presented the motivations that led to the Ecodesign Regulation and the competitive advantages that the REUE offers companies in a context of increasing environmental regulation.

This conference also included a panel discussion on ‘Ecodesign: Value Chain Perspective’, which aimed to explore how the Ecodesign Regulation and the REUE can serve as catalysts to make the economy more circular and sustainable. The panel was moderated by Susana Fonseca, from ZERO - Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável, and included Sónia Passos (Direção-Geral do Consumidor), Cristina Câmara (APED - Associação Portuguesa de Empresas de Distribuição) and Joana Marto (Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa), each bringing valuable perspectives from the areas of consumption, distribution and production, respectively.

This event was thus a unique opportunity for economic operators, sustainability experts and other interested parties to come together to explore the synergies between Ecodesign and REUE, and understand how these tools can promote a necessary change towards a more sustainable future.

#REUE2023 Conference

October 12th 2023

The effects of climate change are an increasingly present reality today, with environmental awareness becoming a growing priority.

Tackling the climate crisis is therefore everyone's responsibility, from the public and private sectors, but also from NGOs, academia and consumers, which is why it requires concerted responses aimed at all stages of the life cycle of products and services, from production to disposal, including consumption. In this context, giving continuity to the various sustainable production and consumption strategies is the only possible way to build a prosperous future for new generations.

The Directorate-General for Economic Activities (DGAE), as the Competent Body for awarding licences to use the EU Ecolabel, has progressively invested in promoting this environmental certification system at national level, implementing constant improvements in the EU Ecolabel communication strategy.

Since 2021, with the aim of giving visibility to and celebrating World Ecolabel Day, the DGAE has organized a virtual conference dedicated to presenting the latest news on the EU Ecolabel and its contribution to society - #REUE2021 | Promoting a Sustainable Transition and #REUE2022 | On the Road to Sustainable Consumption.

In 2023, DGAE celebrated World Ecolabel Day, on October 12, by holding the #REUE2023 Virtual Conference under the motto "Building the future", which highlighted the EU Ecolabel's contribution to the development and implementation of public policies that also promote sustainable production and consumption.

This conference was attended by various speakers from DGAE, the European Commission (DG ENV), the Secretariat-General for the Economy, the Directorate-General for Consumer Affairs and Turismo de Portugal, I.P..

Conference #REUE2022 | On the Road to Sustainable Consumption

October 13th, 2022

With the aim of reinforcing the promotion of the EU Ecolabel system, the Directorate-General for Economic Activities (DGAE) organized the #REUE2022 virtual events cycle.

The EU Ecolabel system is a European instrument of a voluntary nature, which aims to reduce the negative impacts of production and consumption, promoting products and services with a high level of environmental performance. In Portugal, the DGAE is the competent body for granting licences for the use of EU Ecolabel and is responsible for promoting this labeling system.

In 2022, the year in which it celebrated 30 years of existence, this system remains dedicated to ensuring a greener future and building a more resilient Europe, thus contributing to the objectives of the European Green Deal, in particular to achieving the ambition in terms of circular economy, climate neutrality and zero pollution.

With the aim of promoting the REUE system among consumers (B2C and B2B), DGAE held the #REUE2022 virtual conference on October 13th under the motto “On the Route to Sustainable Consumption”. The event featured two interventions by international experts: Björn-Erik Lönn, President of the Global Ecolabeling Network and Anna Norberg, head of press and public relations at the Swedish Competent Body for the EU Ecolabel (Ecolabelling Sweden).
