The Presidency is held on a rotating basis by EU Member States for periods of six months. It is responsible for planning and directing meetings at all levels in the Council (including preparatory bodies) and for promoting the progress of negotiations between Member States. The Presidency is also responsible for representing the Council before other European bodies, namely the European Commission and the European Parliament. Portugal chaired the Council of the European Union in 1992, 2000 and 2007. The Minister of State, Economy and Digital Transition chairs, since January 1, 2021, the Competitiveness Council (Internal Market and Industry).
