There are 10 different Council configurations, where the Member States are represented by the Ministers or Secretaries of State of the relevant area, depending on the subject to be addressed:
The Council is supported by the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Governments of the Member States of the European Union (Coreper) and by more than 150 highly specialized working groups and committees, known as "preparatory bodies".
